Nalco Water recently made history in India by leading and participating in the inaugural CEO Water Alliance (CEWA) Water Dialogue on July 23, 2018 in New Delhi where business, government and civil society leaders discussed an innovative, holistic and viable approach to effective water management.

The CEWA is a unique platform empowered by the U.S.- India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) that serves to bring together CEOs of Indian industries and key government and NGO stakeholders to address the water challenges in India, by promoting sustainable water usage. With the USISPF’s mission being to leverage the powerful strategic partnership between the U.S. and India, the CEWA Water Dialogue was a purpose-driven opportunity for business and government to come together in new ways to create meaningful policies that have the power to change lives.

The CEWA Water Dialogue brought Mukund Vasudevan, Managing Director, Ecolab India, and Chairman of CEWA together with other founding CEOs from Cargill, 3M, PepsiCo, Tata Steel and Westrock to address the water crisis in India and create measures that will promote the sustainable usage of water with industry leaders from ITC, Exxon, Coca Cola and Cairn.

“It's time to galvanize the ecosystem to conceptualize a framework for integrating water systems, using state of the art technologies, best practices and good governance in order to reduce, reuse and recycle water. The industry will have to play a role in these efforts - to not only save water, but also minimise effluents towards a zero-discharge policy,” said Mr Vasudevan.

These business leaders were joined by prominent government stakeholders including Robert Garverick, Minister Counselor for Economic, Environmental, Science & Technology Affairs; and Aileen Nandi, Acting Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the U.S. Embassy; Ambassador Arun K. Singh, Former Indian Ambassador to the U.S; Rajeev Arora, Additional Chief Secretary, Government of Haryana and Akhil Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India. Representatives from institutions such as The World Bank, WaterHealth International and Safe Water Network also participated in the dialogue.

Participants discussed innovative ideas for industrial water availability and emerging wastewater policies across different states in India. Discussions also delved into industries’ best practices and ways to effectively harness the power of technology and predictive insights to increase productivity, while minimising the use of water, with the view to set tangible goals to reduce water consumption by at least 20% in the coming years.
