Nestlé Gympie Saving 45 Million Litres of Water

A Nestlé coffee manufacturing facility in Gympie, home of Nescafe, has successfully implemented an Ecolab solution to treat and recycle water, saving 45 million litres of water annually.

Partnering with Ecolab, Nestlé (in conjunction with Proxa) implemented a Micro Bio Reactor (MBR) and an advanced water performance monitoring technology, 3D TRASAR™  to treat the water and regulate chemical levels.

Nestlé Factory Manager Steve Taljaard said, “We’re committed to investing in continuous improvement of the Gympie site, including improving our environmental efficiency.

“Making coffee uses a lot of water, so finding ways to reduce our water use is a priority.

“Our new treatment system captures and recycles the water used in the coffee making process – and that recycled water is then used in our site’s cooling towers.”

This process has reduced water use at the factory by 20%, totaling 45 million litres annually equivalent to 18 x 50 metre swimming pools, each year.

Paul Rawding, Ecolab Market Head in Australia adds, “Our commitment to sustainability is a key part of our purpose – we all have a responsibility to protect and preserve the environment. Through innovative practices and sustainable solutions, we aim to continue to help our customers protect what’s vital.”

Nestlé is committed to improving their water management practices. Together with Ecolab, the completed water conservation project exemplifies the power of innovation, driving production while lessening environmental impacts.
